Presentation to the City of Rockville for 50 years of community fluoridation
Recommendation
Accept Certificate of Recognition from Dr. Harry Goodman, State Dental Director, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Oral Health
Discussion
Dr. Harry Goodman, State Dental Director, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Oral Health, will present the City of Rockville with a certificate of recognition that celebrates 50 years of community fluoridation (community water treatment). The annual awards are sponsored by the American Dental Association, Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors. Communities nationwide are being singled out as water fluoridation award recipients.
Nearly 70% of U.S. residents (about 184 million people) who are on community water supplies receive fluoridated water according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The goal is to have 75% of U.S. residents on community water systems receiving fluoridated water by 2010. Fluoride, a naturally-occurring compound in the environment, can reduce or prevent tooth decay. Adding or maintaining optimal levels of fluoride in drinking water is a safe and effective public health practice. The CDC identifies water fluoridation as one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. It is particularly important for children and adults who lack adequate access to dental care. Water fluoridation is safe, effective and economical. It benefits the oral health of all residents, regardless of their income or
age. The presentation this evening recognizes Rockville as a leading community in this effort.
