Present certificates of recognition to winner and honorable mentions

The Maryland Municipal League (MML) and the Maryland Mayors’ Association (MMA) invited all fourth grade students throughout Maryland to participate in a statewide essay contest entitled, “If I Were Mayor.” This year’s theme centered around how, as Mayor, the writer would promote his or her community to attract more visitors, and what types of services and community activities as Mayor you would offer your citizens.

To promote the contest, the Mayor sent a letter to all public and private elementary schools in Rockville inviting fourth grade classes to participate in the contest. In addition to the winners chosen by the MML and the MMA, the Mayor selected a winner from a Rockville School, who, this year is Ricky Allen. On May 19, 2008, Ricky was “Mayor for a Day” and as such toured city facilities, went on a a ride-along with a City police officer which included a stop by his school, had lunch with the Mayor, and rode in the Memorial Day parade.

In addition to recognizing Ricky Allen as the Rockville winner of the MML contest, the Mayor selected 8 essays from the other participating schools that will be recognized with an “honorable mention,” as follows:
