Subject
Presentation by The JBG Companies representative Tony Greenberg of a limited edition set of screen prints by artist Howard McCalebb to celebrate the installation of two colorful, abstract, steel sculptures on the grounds of The Alaire residential/retail building in the Twinbrook Station development.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Mayor and Council accept the set of screen prints by artist Howard McCalebb from The JBG Companies, developer of Twinbrook Station.
Discussion
The two pieces of artwork by Howard McCalebb are located on the grounds of The Alaire apartments and retail buildings as part of the first phase within Twinbrook Station were a City requirement of the development. The Publicly Accessible Art in Private Development Ordinance, adopted by the Mayor and Council in 2004, requires the expenditure of funds for the provision of publicly accessible art in commercial, residential and industrial developments.
The purpose of this ordinance is to promote the general welfare by requiring and encouraging the use and incorporation of works of publicly accessible art in private development in order to preserve and enrich the character and environment of the community, improve the quality of life for those who visit, live and/or work in the City, ameliorate the harshness of increased urbanization, and foster the economic vitality of the community.
As the developers of Twinbrook Station, The JBG Companies took great pride in fulfilling the art requirement with two dynamic and vibrant abstract, steel sculptures by American artist, Howard McCalebb. McCalebb, a well-known American abstract sculptor based in Berlin, named the pieces Cat’s Tail and Butterfly. McCalebb's work has been exhibited throughout the world in galleries, museums, sculpture gardens and public spaces – recent installations include projects in Bulgaria, Norway and Lithuania.
