Subject
Presentation of the Bicycle Friendly Community Award

Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Mayor and Council accept the Bicycle Friendly Community award from the League of American Bicyclists representatives and recognize City staff and Bicycle Advisory Committee volunteers responsible for this designation.

Discussion
The Bicycle Friendly Community designation is determined by the League of American Bicyclists and is intended to recognize municipalities that actively support bicycling, provide safe bicycle facilities and encourage bicycle use as an alternative form of transportation. Rockville received this designation at the Bronze Level because of its efforts in the last two years to improve and expand bicycle facilities, increase bicycle safety and designate a pedestrian and bicycle coordinator.

In addition to staff in the departments of Public Works, Police, Recreation and Parks, and City Manager's office participating in the Interdepartmental Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee, City residents have worked toward this award as members of the Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee and Traffic and Transportation Commission. These residents have led community bicycling events and reviewed development applications in their respective advisory roles.
